Abstract

The colonial rule in South Asia profoundly transformed the political, social, and economic structures of the region, leaving enduring legacies that continue to shape contemporary societies. This review critically examines the impact of British colonialism on South Asian countries, particularly India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, by analyzing the institutional, economic, and sociocultural changes introduced during the colonial era. Politically, colonial governance established centralized bureaucratic systems, codified legal institutions, and modern administrative frameworks that later formed the basis of post-colonial state structures. However, these systems were primarily designed to facilitate imperial control and resource extraction rather than indigenous development. Economically, British policies led to deindustrialization, agrarian dependency, commercialization of agriculture, and the systematic “Drain of Wealth,” which weakened local industries and hindered long-term economic growth. Colonial land revenue systems such as Zamindari, Ryotwari, and Mahalwari intensified peasant exploitation, indebtedness, and rural inequality. Socially, colonial practices such as census classification and separate electorates rigidified caste, religious, and communal identities, contributing to social fragmentation and the rise of communal politics. The paper also explores how colonial reforms regarding gender, education, and law often reflected contradictory motives tied to the “civilizing mission.” Furthermore, the study highlights the emergence of nationalist movements, anti-colonial resistance, and subaltern agency in challenging imperial authority. Finally, the review discusses post-colonial continuities, including institutional preservation, regional conflicts, and developmental disparities rooted in colonial structures. Overall, the colonial experience created complex and long-lasting effects that continue to influence governance, identity formation, economic inequality, and social relations across South Asia.
