Abstract

Steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) represents a composite material that combines the strength and durability of concrete with the tensile properties of discrete steel fibers. This review examines the structural performance of SFRC beams under both static and dynamic loading conditions. Analysis of experimental studies demonstrates that SFRC beams exhibit significantly improved flexural strength, ductility, and energy absorption capacity compared to plain concrete beams. Under static loading, SFRC beams show enhanced post-cracking behavior and reduced deflections, with optimal performance typically occurring at fiber volume fractions between 1.0% and 1.5%. Under dynamic impact loading, SFRC exhibits pronounced strain rate sensitivity, with dynamic increase factors varying from 2.0 to 6.0 depending on loading rates and fiber content. The addition of steel fibers effectively controls crack propagation, improves shear resistance, and enables partial replacement of transverse reinforcement in critical zones. Fiber geometry, aspect ratio, and distribution within the matrix significantly influence mechanical performance. Methodologically, studies employ four-point bending tests, drop-weight impact apparatus, and finite element modeling to characterize behavior. Research gaps persist regarding long-term fatigue performance under cyclic loading, optimization of fiber-matrix bonding, and development of comprehensive design guidelines. This review consolidates findings from 60+ peer-reviewed studies to synthesize current knowledge and identify future research directions.
