Concrete is the most widely used construction material globally, but ensuring its long-term durability and structural integrity requires rigorous laboratory testing protocols and quality control measures. This comprehensive review examines the critical importance of concrete laboratory testing in assessing and maintaining civil structure integrity. The study synthesizes findings from over 40 peer-reviewed publications, focusing on mechanical properties testing, non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques, durability assessment methods, and quality control procedures. Laboratory testing determines essential parameters including compressive strength, tensile strength, permeability, and resistance to environmental degradation. Advanced NDT methods such as ultrasonic pulse velocity, rebound hammer testing, and ground penetrating radar provide non-invasive assessment capabilities. The review demonstrates that systematic laboratory testing, combined with field verification, significantly extends concrete structure service life and prevents catastrophic failures. Results indicate that proper quality control during construction, based on laboratory-validated testing protocols, reduces defect rates and improves reliability. The findings emphasize that integrating both destructive and non-destructive testing methodologies, coupled with machine learning predictive models, represents the future direction for comprehensive concrete integrity assessment. This review recommends standardized testing protocols, enhanced automation in quality control, and increased adoption of combined NDT approaches to ensure structural safety and durability in an era of aging infrastructure and challenging environmental conditions.
