Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of web-based and app language improvement initiatives with regard to improving English among Pakistani students. The contribution of three online tools, namely Duolingo, Busuu, and Memrise, is discussed here in developing the language skill by examining data from survey questionnaires and case studies. The results obtained from a sample of 23 students from various levels reveal that although online tools remarkably improve vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar, their impacts on higher-order skills of writing and speaking are moderate. Internet access, digital literacy, and socio-economic constraints affect the overall effectiveness of these learning apps. The study emphasizes the necessity of a blended learning approach, integrating online materials with classroom instruction to achieve optimum learning outcomes. The findings contribute to the ongoing debate on technology-assisted language learning and its potential to mitigate educational inequalities in resource-poor contexts such as Pakistan.
