Abstract

Climate-smart agronomy has emerged as a critical paradigm in addressing the intertwined challenges of food insecurity, climate change, and land degradation. This review article explores the latest innovations driving resilient and productive farming systems through climate-smart approaches that integrate sustainable land management, precision agriculture, and adaptive crop strategies. Emphasizing the synergistic role of soil health restoration, water-use efficiency, and nutrient-smart interventions, the review presents a comprehensive analysis of how data-driven decision-making tools—such as remote sensing, IoT-enabled sensors, and AI-powered crop models—are transforming agronomic practices to withstand environmental stresses. Special attention is given to climate-resilient crop varieties, conservation tillage, agroforestry, and diversified cropping systems that reduce greenhouse gas emissions while enhancing farm productivity and livelihood resilience. The article also examines the role of policy frameworks, farmer-led innovation networks, and gender-inclusive extension services in scaling up climate-smart practices globally. By synthesizing findings from recent field trials, meta-analyses, and case studies across different agroecological zones, the review identifies knowledge gaps and future directions for research and implementation. Ultimately, this work underscores that climate-smart agronomy is not only a toolkit of adaptive practices but a transformative framework for building sustainable agricultural systems that thrive amid climatic uncertainties.
