Abstract

Background: Advanced intelligent vision systems have revolutionized the analysis and defect detection of advanced materials providing automated high-precision monitoring of the microstructures. Systems like these, which merge cutting-edge imaging capabilities and AI, are indispensable to industries like aerospace, automotive and healthcare, where material performance is key.

Objective: This paper examines intelligent vision system applications for machine assisted microstructural analysis and defect detection in advanced materials, with a focus on how they affect material quality assurance in diverse industries.

Method: A review of the recent literature between 2021 and 2025 was systematically done in the framework of the evolution of vision systems, and how they contribute to analyze materials such as high-performance alloys, semiconductors, biomaterials and additive manufacturing. Real-world practical applications were shown in case studies with different industries, aerospace, automotive and medical.

Results: Intelligent vision systems had a statistically significant impact on defect detection, thereby increasing accuracy and efficiency of material analysis. Despite their significant advantages in automation and standardization, challenges to be addressed include the necessity of large annotated datasets, their compatibility to the available workflow and potential overfitting in artificial intelligence (AI) models.

Conclusion: Intelligent vision systems are vital for the progress of material sciences, and exhibits accuracy, efficiency and cost-effectiveness in material analysis. With advances in technology, the development of such systems will remain at the cutting edge in the defect inspection and quality control market.
