This research paper offers an existentialist reading of Saadat Hasan Manto’s short story "Aakhri Salute", analyzing the themes of identity, absurdity, and personal morality within the context of post-Partition conflict. Through the character of Subedar Rab Nawaz, the narrative explores the internal conflict of a soldier torn between duty to the nation and loyalty to personal relationships. Drawing upon the existential philosophies of Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus, the paper highlights how Rab Nawaz’s fragmented sense of self and moral ambiguity reflect the broader absurdity of war. The story questions nationalistic ideologies, as Rab Nawaz finds himself shooting at a former friend, Ram Singh, not out of hatred but due to imposed political divisions. This analysis emphasizes the existential crisis where individual values clash with collective ideologies, and where meaning is lost in the face of forced loyalties. Ultimately, Manto’s story transcends political binaries, presenting war not as a heroic necessity but as a deeply human tragedy filled with ironic choices and absurd outcomes.
